Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) and Mumbai Indians (MI) clashed in the 8th match of the IPL 2024 tournament in Hyderabad on March 27. MI captain Hardik Pandya won the toss and chose to bowl first, a decision which came back to bite him.
In what proved to be a massive run-fest from both the teams, SRH started with Travis Head, who struck 62 in 24 balls with 9 fours and 3 sixes, while Abhishek Sharma hit 63 in 23 balls with 3 fours and 7 sixes.
After they fell, it appeared that MI had a chance to rebound, but Aiden Markram and Heinrich Klaasen added 116* runs for the fourth wicket in only 9 overs.
Markram hit 42* in 28 deliveries, with two fours and one six, while Klaasen hammered MI bowlers for 80* in 34 balls, with four fours and seven sixes. MI's IPL rookie, Kwena Maphaka, gave away 66 runs in four overs.
IPL 2024: Cricket fraternity reacts as SRH defeats MI by 31 runs in absolute run-fest in Hyderabad
SRH broke the 11-year-old record of the highest team total in IPL history which was previously held by RCB. RCB had made 263/5 in IPL 2013 against PWI in Bengaluru when Chris Gayle had hammered 175*.
MI fans were expecting a similar response and Rohit Sharma (26) and Ishan Kishan (34) gave them the start they were looking for. They added 56 runs in 3.2 overs. Then Tilak Varma took over as MI reached their 100 in just 7.3 overs.
Naman Dhir made 30, while Tilak made 64 in 34 balls with 2 fours and 6 sixes. But his wicket proved to be the death knell for MI. Skipper Hardik Pandya managed only 24 runs in 20 balls, while Tim David made 42* in 22 balls to take MI to 246/5 in 20 overs to reduce the margin of defeat.
SRH won the game by 31 runs and for them, Jaydev Unadkat and Cummins took 2 wickets each. Abhishek Sharma was named the Player of the Match.
Multiple records were broken in this game as it saw 38 sixes being hit, the most ever in any T20 game. Also, SRH and MI combined for 523 runs, the most in a T20 game.
The cricket fraternity was left stunned and speechless by the number of runs made in the match and shared their thoughts and praise for the SRH team on social media.
