Rajasthan Royals (RR) started their IPL 2024 journey with a win over Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) on March 24, 2024. The match was played at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur.
Sanju Samson, the home team captain won the toss and chose to bat first in a day game. Yashasvi Jaiswal (24) gave a good start before his dangerous-looking knock was cut short by Mohsin Khan. But then Sanju Samson took over and not only stabilized the RR innings but accelerated at the end as well.
He made 82* with 6 sixes and 3 fours to his name and added 93 runs with Riyan Parag (43) for the 3rd wicket. He then got support from Dhruv Jurel, who made 20* with one six and one four as RR posted 193/4 in 20 overs. Naveen Ul Haq picked 2 wickets for LSG.
In response, Trent Boult rattled the LSG top order with quick wickets of Quinton De Kock (4), and Devdutt Padikkal (0). Ayush Badoni (1) followed soon, becoming first wicket of IPl debutant Nandre Burger.
Captain KL Rahul made 58 in 44 balls with 4 fours and 2 sixes and added 49 runs with Deepak Hooda (26) for 4th wicket. Then Nicholas Pooran took over and slammed 64* in 41 balls with 4 fours and 4 sixes, but the required task became out of reach.
In the end, LSG managed 173/6 in their 20 overs and lost the game by 20 runs. For RR, Boult took 2/35 with the ball.
Sanju Samson was named the Player of the Match for his brilliant knock.
