Ahead of the IPL 2024 season, MS Dhoni has stepped down as Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain, much to the surprise of the fans and cricket experts.
Dhoni, who has led the Super Kings to as many as five IPL titles, has handed over the captaincy reins to top-order batter Ruturaj Gaikwad.
On the eve of the tournament opener, the official X handle of IPL confirmed the development with a post, stating: “Presenting @ChennaiIPL's Captain - @Ruutu1331”.
Moreover, Gaikwad instead of Dhoni featured in the captain’s photoshoot with the prestigious IPL trophy.
Meanwhile, CSK also released an official statement on Dhoni’s decision to relinquish the leadership duties.
“MS Dhoni has handed over Chennai Super Kings’ captaincy to Ruturaj Gaikwad ahead of the start of TATA IPL 2024. Ruturaj has been an integral part of Chennai Super Kings since 2019 and has played 52 matches in IPL during this period. The team looks forward to the upcoming season,” the statement read.
While many speculated that MS Dhoni was going to retire after the IPL 2023, he vowed to return fitness-permitting after CSK's final win.
After the IPL 2023, Dhoni underwent a knee surgery and recovered in time to take part in the 2024 edition.
CSK will be playing four matches during the first phase of the IPL 2024 season, including the tournament opener against RCB at Chepauk.
The defending champions will face Gujarat Titans on March 26 at Chepauk before taking on Delhi Capitals in Vizag on March 31. CSK’s last match in the first phase is scheduled against SRH in Hyderabad on April 5.
