Former India and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) batter Robin Uthappa shared his views on the future of MS Dhoni with the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) ahead of the upcoming IPL 2024. Uthappa said that CSK would likely allow Dhoni to continue playing even if he were in a wheelchair.
However, Uthappa highlighted potential concerns regarding Dhoni's wicketkeeping abilities in the IPL 2024. Dhoni, known for his prowess behind the stumps, has been managing knee issues for a long time, but now his knees are showing signs of wear and tear.
Well, Uthappa feels Dhoni might extend his stint in the IPL if his knees hold up, but once the CSK skipper feels he can’t add value to the team, he will go away from the game.
Robin Uthappa said on Jio Cinema's 'Legends Lounge' episode: “CSK would let him play even if he was on a wheelchair! Get off the wheelchair, bat, and then go back. I don't think batting will ever be an issue for him. I think it's the wicketkeeping.”
Uthappa further stated, “The knees are getting worn out and he loves 'keeping. So, because he won't be able to stand there (in case he can't keep wickets) and add value, he'll probably move on from the game than for any other reason.”
Meanwhile, former England captain Eoin Morgan said that Dhoni would not even think twice once he realized he couldn’t contribute to CSK’s success in the IPL.
Morgan said on the same show, “He's the type of guy that writes his own script. It's a feeling thing, most likely for him. If his knees are as bad as Robbie (Uthappa) eludes, time is probably ticking because he wouldn't want to outstay the position that he has put the franchise in simply because he'll always want the franchise to succeed. He's so generous with his time, with his respect, he'll want somebody to come in and take over the mantle.”
Notably, CSK will take on Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the IPL 2024 opener on March 22 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
