Former New Zealand pacer James Franklin is likely to replace Dale Steyn as Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) bowling coach for the IPL 2024 season, starting on March 22.
SRH will not get the services of Steyn in the upcoming IPL as the South African legend has sought a break from his duties due to personal reasons.
"We are in talks with him (Franklin) as Dale Steyn will not be available for this season," news agency PTI quoted an IPL source as saying.
Franklin had earlier played for Mumbai Indians in the 2011 and 2012 seasons. If the deal is finalized, this will be his maiden stint as coach in the IPL.
However, the 43-year-old has coaching experience with Durham in the English County Championship. He has also served the Pakistan Super League (PSL) team Islamabad United as an assistant coach.
At SRH, Franklin will work with his former New Zealand teammate Daniel Vettori, who was appointed as the team's head coach after IPL 2023. Earlier, they have worked together at Middlesex in County Cricket as well as with Birmingham Phoenix in The Hundred.
Franklin played 31 Tests, 110 ODIs and 38 T20Is for New Zealand between 2001 and 2013. He started his career as a left-arm pacer and gradually worked on his batting to become a useful all-rounder for the Black Caps.
James Franklin has 82 Test wickets, 81 ODI wickets and 20 T20I wickets to his name. He has also hit a hundred and a couple of half-centuries in the longest format.
