Irfan Pathan, the former Indian all-rounder turned commentator, backed the idea of KL Rahul batting down the order for the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in the upcoming IPL 2024.
Pathan compared Rahul's batting prowess to that of a car with gears in an era dominated by automatic cars, as he was highlighting the LSG skipper’s versatility.
The former Indian all-rounder suggested that given Rahul's ability to adapt and excel in various batting positions, batting down the order might prove beneficial for the LSG in the IPL 2024.
Irfan Pathan said during a discussion on Star Sports: “He (Rahul) is a car with gears in an era of automatic cars. He can bat in any gear from first to fifth. He even has a sixth gear. So, considering that, KL Rahul batting down the order might not be bad at all (for LSG).”
On being asked who would open for LSG if Rahul drops down to the middle order, Pathan said that Quinton de Kock and Kyle Mayers could be a great opening combination for the team.
He signed off by saying, “The team combination (playing XI) could include both Quinton de Kock and Kyle Mayers in such a scenario. If both of them get a place, they (LSG) can go with an all-Indian pace attack.”
Notably, LSG also have in-form Devdutt Padikkal, who was traded in from Rajasthan Royals (RR) ahead of the IPL auction, and he can also partner Mayers or De Kock in the upcoming season.
