Lasith Malinga set to replace Shane Bond as Mumbai Indians’ fast bowling coach: Report

Malinga won four IPL titles with Mumbai Indians as a player.

Lasith Malinga | BCCI/IPLFormer Sri Lanka pacer Lasith Malinga is set to rejoin Mumbai Indians (MI) as their fast bowling coach for the 2024 edition of Indian Premier League (IPL).

Malinga will replace Shane Bond in that role. The ex-New Zealand fast bowler had held the position for the past nine seasons.

However, an IPL source told news agency PTI that Bond's contract with Mumbai is still under review.

"MI's contract with Bond is still not over as yet," the source said.

Earlier, a report published in ESPNCricinfo claimed that there is no clarity whether Bond would continue as the head coach of MI Emirates in the ILT20.

Playing for Mumbai Indians, Lasith Malinga did exceptionally well, picking up 195 wickets from 139 games at an economy rate of 7.12. He won five titles with MI – four in IPL (2013, 2015, 2017, 2019) and the Champions League T20 in 2011.

Malinga performed the role of MI’s bowling mentor in 2018. A year later, he made a comeback to the field and played a part in their fourth IPL triumph.

In September 2021, Lasith Malinga retired from all forms of cricket. He was roped in by Rajasthan Royals as fast bowling coach in 2022.
