Delhi Capitals (DC) management has decided to retain majority of their coaching staff for the next season of the Indian Premier League next season (IPL 2024), despite the franchise finishing at the bottom of IPL 2023 points table with only 5 wins in 14 matches.
David Warner had captained the DC side in the absence of Rishabh Pant and the team just couldn’t string together a series of wins in the tournament and lost important matches at the wrong time. They were the first team to be eliminated from the race of the IPL 2023 playoffs.
And there were reports that the DC management might part ways with their head coach Ricky Ponting with director of cricket Sourav Ganguly, taking up the additional responsibility of coaching the side.
“There's an aura around him,” Devon Conway feels lucky to play under MS Dhoni at CSK
It was also expected that a bunch of wholesale changes might also happen in the management, but Parth Jindal, the co-owner of Delhi Capitals has indicated that not many heads might roll in the aftermath of IPL 2023.
The management has decided to stick with Ricky Ponting as the head coach despite a horrid season this year. And the Times of India reports that the franchise is likely to prune the support staff by letting go of the services of Shane Watson and James Hopes as assistant coach and fast bowling coach respectively.
The report also shed light that Ajit Agarkar and Pravin Amre, who have been with the side as an assistant and batting coach respectively, are in line for bigger roles in the franchise.
“The franchise doesn’t intend to bring any replacement coaches for Watson and Hopes. It’s more about reducing support staff to have more clarity. Amre has done well in getting this franchise a good core of youngsters since 2015. He will be given a free hand to rebuild the side. Ponting and Amre have been common factors when Capitals did well between 2019 and 2022,” a source told TOI.
“Preparations for next year’s IPL are underway here at Delhi Capitals, alongside Sourav Ganguly and Ricky Ponting. We assure the fans that Kiran (Grandhi, co-owner) and I are working hard to get back to where we want this franchise to be and that is right at the very top,” co-owner Parth Jindal tweeted on Wednesday.
