The 2023 edition of Indian Premier League (IPL) came to an end on Monday (May 29), with Chennai Super Kings (CSK) defeating Gujarat Titans (GT) by five wickets (DLS method) to lift the trophy for the fifth time.
It was a rain-marred affair at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, where GT piled up a massive 214/4 in their allotted 20 overs. Sai Sudharsan was the top scorer with 47-ball 96 while Wriddhiman Saha (54 off 39), Shubman Gill (39 off 20) and Hardik Pandya (21* off 12) chipped in with handy contributions.
In reply, CSK were 4/0 off 3 balls when rain interrupted the match for a considerable period. As a result, the MS Dhoni-led side was given a revised target of 171 in 15 overs.
After the rain break, CSK’s opening duo of Ruturaj Gaikwad (26) and Devon Conway (47) added 70 more runs to their partnership. Both of them got out in quick succession but the likes of Ajinkya Rahane (27 off 13) and Ambati Rayudu (19 off 8) returned with handy cameos to keep the Super Kings in the chase.
With 13 needed off the final over, Mohit Sharma bowled four consecutive yorkers to Shivam Dube (32* off 21) and Ravindra Jadeja and conceded only three runs. However, Jadeja (15* off 6) smashed the penultimate delivery for a six and the final delivery for a boundary to seal the deal for CSK.
While all the CSK players were in a jubilant mood after the title win, skipper MS Dhoni remained calm and composed initially while sitting in the dugout. However, when Jadeja reached the dugout, the CSK captain showed his emotions and lifted the all-rounder to celebrate their triumph.
