IPL 2023: “It is difficult to read his mind,” Gavaskar reacts to Dhoni’s retirement speculations after ongoing IPL

Speculations are rife that Dhoni will retire from professional cricketer after the IPL 2023 season.

MS Dhoni | BCCI-IPLWith the IPL 2023 season nearing its business end, MS Dhoni’s future with Chennai Super Kings (CSK) has once again become a topic of discussion.

Amid the speculations, batting legend Sunil Gavaskar has opined that Dhoni has given mixed signals throughout the season on the question of his retirement and it is difficult to read his mind.

"Mixed signs from MS Dhoni on his retirement. It is difficult to read his mind, and that's how good captains generally are. Good captains always keep the opposition guessing," Gavaskar said while speaking to Sports Today.

Last month, Dhoni was asked about his retirement plans at an event and he replied that there is a lot of time to take that call and he didn’t want the coach to be put under pressure by saying something now.

Just like millions of his fans, Gavaskar wants Dhoni to continue playing and leave the game on a high.

"We all want him to go on, and we want him to go on a high. We want him to go out at the height of his powers, delighting the fans with sixes like he always has," he added.

Under Dhoni’s captaincy, CSK have won the IPL title four times. While the Super Kings endured a rare dismal campaign last year, they bounced back this season to finish the league stage at the second spot with 17 points from 14 games.

The Super Kings are currently facing Gujarat Titans in Qualifier 1 of IPL 2023 at Chepauk. Gavaskar highlighted the key role played by Dhoni in CSK’s success this season.

"Chennai's biggest advantage is that they have a captain who knows what to do in any given situation," he said.

Taking about GT’s chances, Gavaskar said: "Gujarat Titans have found different players who rise to the occasion."
