Shubman Gill on Sunday (May 21) once again showed why he is touted as the next all-format batting superstar of the Indian cricket team.
Chasing RCB’s stiff target of 198, Gill slammed 104 not out off 52 balls to take Gujarat Titans over the finishing line with six wickets and five deliveries to spare. His whirlwind century was studded with 5 fours and 8 sixes.
It was Shubman’s second consecutive hundred in the ongoing IPL. With this knock, he reached 680 runs this season and he is currently 50 runs behind the current Orange Cap holder Faf du Plessis.
After his match-winning ton at Chinnaswamy Stadium, Shubman Gill is garnering praise from all quarters but it was former India spinner Harbhajan Singh’s compliment that caught everyone’s attention.
Lauding Gill, Harbhajan highlighted the stark contrasts between GT opener and RCB star Virat Kohli, who also hit a century (101* off 61) in the same game.
"Shubman Gill constructs his innings brilliantly. He has his own persona and possesses that lazy elegance, unlike intense Virat Kohli. He can play all kinds of shots with ease just like Kohli, but he won't appear as aggressive as Kohli with his body language. He is a different character. He's such a prospective talent for India," Harbhajan said on Star Sports' Cricket Live.
"You never see Virat Kohli play risky shots, he always looks to play in the 'V'. He has proper cricketing shots and that is why he's such a great batter. Kohli is a proper batter and he can play any format of the game be it Tests, T20s or even T10s because of the supreme technique," he added.
While Shubman Gill’s IPL team Gujarat Titans qualified for the playoffs by topping the points table in the league stage, Virat Kohli’s RCB side got knocked out of the playoffs race after losing their last group match.
For India, both batters will be seen in action during the World Test Championship final against Australia next month
