IPL 2023: “Don’t think it’s anything serious,” Sanjay Bangar provides update on Virat Kohli’s knee niggle

Kohli grabbed a brilliant catch to dismiss Vijay Shankar but hurt his knee in the process.

Virat Kohli | PTIVirat Kohli picked up a niggle on his right knee during RCB’s last league match of IPL 2023 against GT at Chinnaswamy Stadium on Sunday (May 21), revealed head coach Sanjay Bangar.

However, Bangar confirmed after the game that there is nothing to worry about as the injury is not that serious.

RCB were eliminated from the IPL 2023 playoffs race as they suffered a six-wicket defeat at the hands of GT. After entertaining the fans with a magnificent century, Kohli grabbed a brilliant catch to dismiss Vijay Shankar but hurt his knee in the process.

The star batter was seen limping when after taking the catch. Kohli was also attended by a physio before he walked off the field. He watched the last five overs of the game from the dugout.

“Yeah, he had a bit of a niggle in his knee. But I don’t think there is anything serious,” Bangar said in the post-match press conference.

RCB rode on Virat Kohli’s 101* off 61 balls to post 197/5 on the board. It was his second consecutive ton in the ongoing IPL as his seventh overall in the cash-rich tournament.

“Having scored two back-to-back hundreds within a gap of 4 days. He is somebody who not only wants to contribute with the bat but even when he is fielding. He did a lot of running around. 40 overs a couple of days ago and today, for 35 overs he was on the field.

“He was giving his best. So it is going to bother at some point but I don’t think it’s anything serious,” Bangar added.

Kohli is among the seven Indian players who will depart for England on Tuesday (May 23) to begin preparation for the all-important World Test Championships final against Australia, slated to be held at the Oval in London from June 7.

Test specialist Cheteshwar Pujara, who is currently featuring in the County Championship for Sussex, will join the squad in UK.
