Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) defeated Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in their final IPL 2023 league match by 1 run to qualify for the playoffs. They became the third team after Gujarat Titans and Chennai Super Kings to enter the knockouts.
After the match, the LSG team was subjected to “Kohli..Kohli” chants by the brutal Eden Gardens crowd.
The infamous May 1 incident in Lucknow continues to be remembered by supporters, who occasionally use it to demonstrate their support for Virat Kohli and occasionally as part of psychological tricks to divert the LSG players.
The 'Kohli' chants had begun when LSG skipper Krunal Pandya handed the new ball to Naveen in the second over of Kolkata Knight Riders chase. Naveen erred in the over and was smacked for a flurry of boundaries against Jason Roy which further led the crowd to tease Afghanistan quick.
Naveen-Ul-Haq had the chance to silence the Kolkata fans by putting his finger on his mouth after Ravi Bishnoi completed a good catch to dismiss Rahmanullah Gurbaz.
Not only Naveen but LSG mentor and former KKR captain Gautam Gambhir was subjected to the ‘Kohli’ chants.
At the end of the match, when Gambhir was making his way back into the dressing room, a loud 'Kohli' chant broke out near that stand. The LSG mentor threw a death stare at them and then gestured for them to keep the volume down.
