The 62nd match of the IPL 2023 saw Gujarat Titans (GT) clashing with Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on May 15. SRH needed a win to stay alive, while a win here for GT would’ve meant qualification into the playoffs.

Aiden Markram of SRH won the toss and chose to bowl first. Shubman Gill scored his maiden IPL century, making 101 in 58 balls with 13 fours and one six. Sai Sudharsan made 47 runs on his comeback into the side as GT posted 188/9 in 20 overs.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar picked his second fifer in IPL, finishing with 5/30. He is only the third bowler to pick up multiple fifers in the league, after Jaydev Unadkat and James Faulkner.

In reply, Mohammad Shami rattled the SRH top-order with four wickets to his name reducing them to 45/5. Though Heinrich Klaasen made 64 and Bhuvneshwar Kumar made 27, Mohit Sharma’s 4/28 destroyed the middle order as SRH finished on 154/9 in 20 overs.

GT won the match by 34 runs and moved to 18 points in the points table in 13 matches and qualified for the IPL 2023 playoffs. They also sealed top two finish and will play in Qualifier 1.

SRH, on the other hand, joined DC as the teams to have been eliminated from the race to knockouts.

The cricket fraternity reacted to a clinical win by GT and lauded them on becoming the first team to make it into playoffs this season.
