IPL 2023: “Only Rashid Khan turned up from our team,” says Hardik Pandya after GT’s 27-run loss to MI

Rashid took four wickets and smashed 103* off 49 balls against MI at the Wankhede Stadium.

Rashid Khan | BCCI-IPLRashid Khan produced an all-round show in Gujarat Titans’ (GT) 27-run defeat against Mumbai Indians (MI) in Match 57 of IPL 2023 at the Wankhede Stadium on Friday (May 12).

Although MI’s dashing batter Suryakumar Yadav (103* off 49) took the Titans attack to the cleaners, Rashid returned with remarkable bowling figures of 4 for 30 in his four overs.

Chasing 219 to win, GT’s batting line-up crumbled under pressure but Rashid slammed 79 not out off 32 balls to propel the defending champions to 191/8 in 20 overs.

After the game, GT skipper Hardik Pandya heaped praise on Rashid Khan, saying that it felt like only the latter turned up from his side.

"Felt like only Rashid Khan turned up from our team, batted and bowled incredibly well," he said at the post-match presentation ceremony.

Hardik admitted that Gujarat Titans did not have clear plans and their bowling unit failed to stop Suryakumar, who smashed his maiden IPL century.

Surya became the fifth MI batter to hit a hundred in the IPL and the first after Sachin Tendulkar to register a three-figure mark at the Wankhede Stadium.

"We don't have to try much, as a group overall we weren't there in any department. Didn't have clear plans, bowlers didn't execute. I felt we gave 25 runs extra. We were far from winning this game but because of Rashid, we ensured there wasn't a big dent to our NRR," Hardik stated.

"People have spoken enough about SKY, one of the best batters in T20 cricket. Really tough to set fields for him. You saw what can happen if you don't execute your plans. He kept putting pressure on our bowlers."

Despite the loss, Gujarat Titans held onto the top spot on the points table, carrying 16 points after 12 games. On the other hand, Mumbai Indians moved to third place in the 10-team standings.
