IPL 2023: “Milestones don't matter,” Simon Doull feels GT should have retired out Shubman Gill vs LSG

Shubman Gill scored 94 not out off 51 balls against Lucknow Super Giants.

Shubman Gill | BCCI-IPLFormer New Zealand cricketer-turned-commentator Simon Doull is hogging the headlines these days for his on-air remarks.

In the ongoing IPL season, Doull has already criticized star batters like Virat Kohli and KL Rahul for their batting approach. In fact, he accused Kohli of playing for personal milestone in RCB’s match against LSG last month and his comments created quite a stir.

On Sunday (May 7), Simon Doull was crucial of Gujarat Titans (GT) opener Shubman Gill, who scored 94 not out off 51 balls against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) at Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad.

Although Gill batted with a healthy strike rate of 184.31 and his knock was studded with 2 fours and 7 sixes, Doull wasn’t quite impressed with it as the right-hander struggled for boundaries in stretches.

Doull felt that Shubman Gill was getting tired and the defending champions should have retired him out, while adding that teams need to make the most of the option of retiring a batter.

“Shubman was getting tired. He wasn't able to hit the boundaries at much as he could. And it can happen. Listen...it might be controversial, but I am waiting for the day when a bloke gets 75 or 80 off 45 balls and is cooked after the afternoon heat which is 45 degrees and hence quite can't get there so he says 'Okay Tewatia, you are out there.' Retire him out,” Simon Doull said in a conversation with Cricbuzz.

Doull also reiterated that milestones don't matter in the shortest format of the game.

“I'm saying time and time again, milestones don't matter in this game. I know people will still say hundred is a hundred. Yes it is, but it's a hundred if you win. If you lose, it means jack. I feel were just quite there when a guy says that he is tired and is not able to hit the boundaries. And if you have ammunition in the bank then why not use it,” he remarked.
