David Warner was an elated captain as Delhi Capitals (DC) registered a thumping seven-wicket victory over Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) at Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi on Saturday (May 6).
Opting to bat first, RCB posted 181/4 on the board with key contributions from Mahipal Lomror (54* off 29), Faf du Plessis (45 off 32) and Virat Kohli (55 off 46).
In reply, the hosts rode on Phil Salt’s destructive 87 off 45 balls (8 fours and 6 sixes) to overhaul the target with 20 deliveries to spare.
Speaking after the game, DC skipper David Warner said the strategy was to target RCB’s pace spearhead Mohammed Siraj and just “take him on”.
“Amazing. I thought it was a par score, the ball was skidding. But the way we came out led by Phil Salt paved the way. Our intention was to take on Siraj, he's been bowling well and taking wickets early. His wickets have been bowled or LBW so we wanted to drag his length back,” Warner said at the post-match presentation.
The DC captain also praised his bowlers for restricting the Bangalore-based franchise to a chaseable total.
“Credit to the way the bowlers bowled, Anrich is not there but Ishant is leading the pack with Khaleel. And Kuldeep and Akshar as well have been brilliant,” he added.
It was DC’s fourth win in 10 games this season and they are now occupying ninth spot on the points table featuring 10 teams.
Delhi Capitals will next face Chennai Super Kings at Chepauk on Wednesday (May 10).
“It is all about momentum, we are finding the right balance at the right time. Now we go to Chennai and try to get a performance there, I know it will be tough,” Warner stated.
