Delhi Capitals (DC) are enduring a tough time in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) season. The David Warner-led side suffered five successive defeats before winning the last two games to get the campaign back on track.

Akshar Patel has been a standout performer for the Capitals in both wins. The DC vice-captain held his nerves and played a patient knock of 19* to take his team over the line in a low-scoring thriller against KKR.

On Monday (April 24), Akshar scored 34 runs and returned with the bowling figures of 2/21 to script Delhi’s seven-run victory.

Impressed with Akshar Patel’s consistent run in the IPL, batting legend Sunil Gavaskar has opined that the all-rounder should be appointed captain of Delhi Capitals.

"I believe Akshar Patel should be appointed the captain of Delhi Capitals. He is an honest player. He's in a good rhythm. The Indian team can benefit from him being named the captain of the franchise and performing well. All these things should be done in the long run," Gavaskar said on Star Sports Cricket Live.

Akshar Patel has been in fine form with the bat in international cricket lately. He slammed 264 runs in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2023, becoming India's second highest run-getter after Virat Kohli in the four-match Test series.

Talking about his consistency across formats, Akshar said the confidence that he gained from the last international season has helped him do well for the Capitals in IPL 2023.

"There is confidence, confidence in my batting ability because of the way I have been batting over the last 1 year. I am carrying forward that confidence. And when things are going well, I want to be consistent, I want to carry the form forward. That's how I think," Akshar said after DC’s win in Hyderabad.
