It’s been a couple of weeks since the start of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 and the tournament has already produced some nail-biting games.
While youngsters like Rinku Singh, Ayush Badoni and Sai Sudharsan have impressed one and all with their exploits, batting legend Sunil Gavaskar feels he is yet to find any ‘exciting young talent’ in the first few matches of the season.
According to Gavaskar, who is covering the IPL as a commentator, the IPL 2023 season hasn’t lived up to expectations. He found a dearth of exciting young talents and doesn’t expect that to change in the rest of the season.
“…unless there are some hidden gems yet to be unearthed, the fast bowling department, the opening batting and spin bowling sections are looking devoid of any exciting talent,” Gavaskar wrote in his latest column for Sportstar.
“In the bowling department, too, there seems to be a dearth of talent. While it is understandable that the T20 format is very harsh on the bowlers, the lack of much planning and thought when the batter gets stuck into them is a concern. The spinners hardly ever change the pace at which they deliver and by bowling flatter they seem like medium pacers, which is exactly what the batters are looking for,” he added.
On Tuesday (April 11), Mumbai Indians (MI) registered a six-wicket victory over Delhi Capitals (DC) in Match 16 of the IPL 2023 season at Arun Jaitley Stadium.
Asked to bat first, the Capitals were bundled out for 172 in 19.4 overs. Akshar Patel top scored with 54 off 25 balls while opener David Warner chipped in with 47-ball 51.
In reply, MI rode on skipper Rohit Sharma’s 45-ball 65 and Tilak Varma’s 29-ball 41 to overhaul the target on the final delivery.
Chennai Super Kings will take on Rajasthan Royals in the 17th match at Chepauk on Wednesday (April 12).
