The netizens were absolutely furious with Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik, as his fumble on the last ball of the match against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) on Monday, proved to be costly for the Faf du Plessis-led side who lost by one wicket.
Needing 5 runs to win off the last over, Harshal Patel took two wickets in the first five balls and it all came to one needed off the last delivery. Patel then tried to run out Ravi Bishnoi at the non-striker’s end as he had moved out early, failed to do so in his bowling stride.
Then he bowled the perfect wide full delivery and Avesh Khan and Bishnoi scampered for a single, while Karthik, failed to collect the ball properly and couldn’t throw it in time, as RCB lost the match by one wicket.
After the match, Karthik was bashed left, right and centre by fans on social media with reference to MS Dhoni's iconic moment.
MS Dhoni had famously ran Mustafizur Rahman out on the last ball of the India vs Bangladesh T20 World Cup 2016 encounter at the same venue in Bengaluru to help India win by one run.
Dhoni was alert to the fact that Bangladeshi batters will go for the run no matter what and had taken his right glove off.
When the striker missed the ball, Dhoni collected it calmly and sprinted to the stumps, demolishing them in time before Rahman reached the crease to give India an important win.
On Monday night, RCB fans gave Karthik a reminder of that after the wicketkeeper had fumbled in an exact similar moment. He wasn’t alert and in his hurriedness to throw the ball, couldn’t collect it properly and missed a run out chance which could have taken the game into a super over.
