Jason Holder took an amazing reflex catch of Rahul Tripathi | IPL TwitterOn April 2, 2023, the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) played their first IPL 2023 match at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Uppal, Hyderabad. After winning the toss, SRH's acting captain Bhuvneshwar Kumar decided to bowl first.

Adil Rashid, Mayank Agarwal, Harry Brook, and Glenn Phillips all made their SRH debuts. Jason Holder and KM Asif received their first caps for RR.

RR got off to a blazing start thanks to Yashasvi Jaiswal’s 54 in 37 balls and Jos Buttler’s 54 off 22 balls, as the duo added 85 runs in powerplay overs. Sanju Samson then joined the celebration and scored 55 in 32 balls. However, the SRH bowlers reined in the run scoring with wickets of Devdutt Padikkal and Riyan Parag.

Shimron Hetmyer’s 16-ball 22* helped RR finish on 203/5 in 20 overs with Fazalhaq Farooqui and T Natarajan picking two wickets apiece.

RR would have hoped for a bumper start with the ball while Mayank Agarwal and Abhishek Sharma opened for SRH. Trent Boult gave RR the perfect start with the wicket of Sharma on the third ball of the first over and then had the dangerous Rahul Tripathi’s wicket as well, but the credit should go to Jason Holder.

Tripathi charged Boult who had bowled the ball a bit full and wide after seeing him step down the wicket. Tripathi tried to nudge it past or over the slips, and opened his bat. But the ball took the edge and flew to the left of slip fielder Jason Holder.

Holder flung himself to his left and held onto a spectacular catch, as his reaction and everyone else’s said. Rahul Tripathi reviewed the dismissal for a bump ball, but the replays showed that it was a genuine edge and the catch was clean.
