IPL 2023: Buttler, Samson and Chahal help RR start their campaign with a thumping 72-run win over SRH in Hyderabad

Jos Buttler | IPL-BCCIOn April 2, 2023, the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) played their first IPL 2023 match at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Uppal, Hyderabad. After winning the toss, SRH's acting captain Bhuvneshwar Kumar decided to bowl first.

Adil Rashid, Mayank Agarwal, Harry Brook, and Glenn Phillips all made their SRH debuts. Jason Holder and KM Asif received their first caps for RR.

RR got off to a blazing start thanks to Yashasvi Jaiswal’s 54 in 37 balls and Jos Buttler’s 54 off 22 balls, as the duo added 85 runs in powerplay overs. Sanju Samson then joined the celebration and scored 55 in 32 balls. However, the SRH bowlers reined in the run flow with wickets of Devdutt Padikkal and Riyan Parag.

Shimron Hetmyer’s 16-ball 22* helped RR finish on 203/5 in 20 overs with Fazalhaq Farooqui and T Natarajan picking two wickets apiece.

In reply, Trent Boult removed Abhishek Sharma and Rahul Tripathi for ducks in the first over itself and SRH couldn’t recover from that start.

Mayank Agarwal (27) and Abdul Samad (32*) made some notable scores, but SRH could only manage 131/8 in 20 overs and lost the match by 72 runs. Yuzvendra Chahal was the pick of bowlers for RR with 4/17, while Boult took 2/21.

Rajasthan Royals will next face Punjab Kings in Jaipur on April 5, while Sunrisers Hyderabad will clash with Lucknow Super Giants in Lucknow on April 7.
