IPL 2023: MS Dhoni likely to miss CSK’s opening fixture against Gujarat Titans due to injury – Report

CSK will open their IPL 2023 campaign on March 31.

MS Dhoni | IPL/BCCIChennai Super Kings (CSK) have suffered a blow ahead of their IPL 2023 opener against Gujarat Titans (GT) in Ahmedabad on Friday (March 31).

According to a report published in The Indian Express, the four-time champions are likely to take the field without their skipper MS Dhoni, who has been struggling with a niggle in his left knee.

The report claims that the CSK captain is still feeling some discomfort and doesn’t want to push too much as the team is short on wicketkeeping options.

In case, Dhoni doesn’t take part in the opening fixture, it would be interesting to see who captains the side. Ben Stokes, who is being seen as Dhoni’s successor, is struggling with knee injury himself. Ravindra Jadeja or Ruturaj Gaikwad will reportedly lead the side in the campaign opener.

As per the report, Dhoni came for the practice session on the eve of the match but he didn’t bat in the nets.

“According to those in the know, a call on Dhoni’s availability is expected to be taken only on Friday, but chances of his inclusion remain bleak. With no regular wicketkeeper in the mix, Chennai would be looking at Devon Conway to take the gloves and in case the Kiwi opener doesn’t start the game, one of Gaikwad or Ambati Rayudu will keep wicket,” the report stated.

It is learnt that Dhoni has been struggling with left knee injury over the last few days. During the intra-squad practice match at Chepauk earlier this week, the 41-year-old was seen seated with a knee cap.

Although Dhoni came out to bat, he was struggling to run and was seen limping every time he pushed for a two. During the match, he didn’t keep wicket as well.
