IPL 2023: Delhi Capitals appoint David Warner as captain, Akshar Patel as deputy; Ganguly named Director of Cricket

Delhi Capitals will open their campaign against Lucknow Super Giants on April 1.

David Warner and Akshar Patel | BCCI/IPLDelhi Capitals on Thursday (March 16) named veteran Australia opener David Warner as the captain and India all-rounder as the vice-captain for the 2023 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL).

With Rishabh Pant being injured following a car crash last December, the Capitals were seeking an able candidate for the leadership role.

Warner is certainly an ideal individual for the captaincy since he has the experience of leading an IPL team. The southpaw was captain of Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) from 2015 to much of the 2021 season, establishing himself as one of the most prolific run scorers in the IPL and leading them to their only title in 2016.

Taking to Twitter, DC confirmed the appointment of Warner as skipper and Akshar as his deputy.

Delhi Capitals also confirmed that former India skipper Sourav Ganguly returned to the set-up as Director of Cricket.  This is Ganguly's first major role after his tenure as BCCI president ended late last year. He previously worked as the mentor of the Delhi-based franchise in IPL 2019.

“Sourav Ganguly returns to Delhi Capitals as our Director of Cricket for #TATAIPL2023. Welcome Back, Dada,” DC tweeted.

While the IPL 2023 is slated to get underway on March 31, Delhi Capitals will open their campaign against Lucknow Super Giants on April 1.
