The Indian Premier League (IPL) is widely regarded as the most popular cricketing event across the globe. Over the years, the cash-rich tournament has given emerging stars like Hardik Pandya, Jasprit Bumrah, Shubman Gill, and many more to international cricket.
The upcoming IPL season, slated to get underway on March 31, will be the 16th edition of the competition.
With the IPL 2023 around the corner, a panel discussion was organised by Jio Cinema, featuring Chris Gayle, Anil Kumble, Parthiv Patel, Robin Uthappa, Scott Styris, and Aakash Chopra, where the former cricketers shared their opinion on who can be the emerging star this year.
"Having worked closely with someone like Arshdeep Singh, it's wonderful to see him grow into what he has done for India. I would love to see Arshdeep as the next superstar bowler coming through and from the batting perspective, Ishan Kishan is wonderful with the opportunities he has got, so he is someone whom I think can be a superstar," Kumble, who was previously associated with Punjab Kings as head coach, said.
Arshdeep has impressed one and all in his brief international career so far. The left-arm pacer has represented India in three ODIs and 26 T20Is, claiming a total of 41 wickets. He took 10 scalps in six games during the T20 World Cup in Australia last year.
As the discussion went on, former India wicketkeeper Parthiv Patel picked Sunrisers Hyderabad pacer Umran Malik and Mumbai Indians batter Tilak Verma as star players for the upcoming IPL.
Parthiv also believes that Tilak can be a future leader for the five-time IPL champions.
"Umran Malik. Someone who is quick and bowling well and he has already played for India but yeah I think he can be a superstar. Batting wise, having seen Tilak Verma in a couple of years. I had the opportunity to scout and back him and a kind of a cricketer he has become. He also has an ability to lead a side, so, I think he can be a future leader," said Parthiv Patel.
