IPL 2023: Wasim Jaffer expects Adam Zampa to sit out most of the season for Rajasthan Royals

RR already have ace spinners like R Ashwin and Yuzvendra Chahal in their ranks.

Adam Zampa | GettyAfter going unsold during the IPL 2022 mega-auction earlier this year, Australia leg-spinner Adam Zampa found a bidder at the IPL 2023 mini-auction held in Kochi on Friday (December 23).

Zampa was roped in by inaugural IPL champions Rajasthan Royals (RR) for his base price of INR 1.50 Crore.

However, former India cricketer Wasim Jaffer feels Zampa might not get a lot of chances for RR in the 2023 edition of the Indian Premier League.

His comment came since the Royals already have ace spinners like R Ashwin and Yuzvendra Chahal in their ranks. Moreover, the likes of Murugan Ashwin and KC Cariappa are also part of their squad.

According to Jaffer, Zampa going to Mumbai Indians (MI) would have made more sense.

“Last year, they didn’t have any backup for Ashwin and Chahal. Now, they’ve got far too many. They’ve got Zampa, Murugan Ashwin, and Cariappa,” Jaffer was quoted as saying to ESPNcricinfo.

“Azam Zampa going to a franchise, probably they should have thought that he would have gone to Mumbai Indians makes more sense, probably he’ll sit out most of the season because Ashwin and Yuzvendra Chahal playing there,” he added.

Besides Zampa, the Royals also signed Joe Root, Abdul Basith, Akash Vashist, Murugan Ashwin, KM Asif, Kunal Singh Rathore, Donovan Ferreira and Jason Holder in the mini-auction.

In the 2022 edition of IPL, Rajasthan Royals performed brilliantly. Under Sanju Samson’s leadership, they reached the tournament’s final, where they lost to Gujarat Titans.
