Former West Indies all-rounder Dwayne Bravo has retired as a player from the Indian Premier League (IPL) on Friday (November 2), as confirmed by his long-time franchise Chennai Super Kings (CSK).

Bravo wasn't retained by the franchise ahead of the IPL 2023 auction, but he will continue his association with the Super Kings in the capacity of bowling coach, with Lakshmipathy Balaji stepping away for a year due to personal commitments.

Bravo is the highest wicket-taker in the history of IPL with 183 wickets after making his debut in the inaugural season in 2008, including 140 for CSK. He also scored 1560 runs often contributing vital runs down the order for his three franchises Mumbai Indians, Gujarat Lions and Chennai Super Kings.

"I’m looking forward to this new journey because it’s something I see myself doing after my playing days is fully over. I enjoy working with bowlers and it’s a role I’m excited about. From player to coach, I don’t think I have to adjust much because while I’m playing, I always work with bowlers and try to come up with plans and ideas on how to have that one step ahead of the batsmen. The only difference is I will no longer be standing at mid-on or mid-off!

I never thought I would be the leading wicket taker in the history of IPL. But I’m just happy to be a part of IPL history!" said Bravo in a statement.

Bravo was an integral part of the CSK since 2011. He was a part of Chennai Super Kings' IPL triumphs in 2011, 2018 and 2021 and the Champions League T20 title in 2014. He was also the first player to win the Purple Cap for most wickets in an IPL season twice (2013 and 2015).

Bravo overall played 144 T20 matches for Chennai Super Kings, picking up 168 wickets and scoring 1556 runs. He is the highest wicket-taker of all-time in the format with 614 wickets across the world.

The 39-year-old also recorded a touching video for the CSK fans on Instagram after his IPL retirement.
