The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has decided to implement a new rule in the upcoming Indian Premier League 2023 (IPL 2023), which is scheduled to be held in April-May next year.
On Friday, December 2, the BCCI officially confirmed its intention to introduce the "impact player" rule in IPL 2023, having already tested the rule in the recently concluded Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.
The BCCI, via a virtual IPL Governing Council meeting on Thursday night, decided to introduce the rule in the upcoming season of the IPL 2023, where all the teams will be able to utilise their 12th man.
According to the "impact player" rule, the IPL teams will be able to bring in a substitute in place of another player already part of the playing XI. However, teams will have to submit the names of four players at the toss who they might use as impact players in the match.

The rule will allow teams to make a change in their playing XI by bringing in a substitute from the submitted list, but they can only bring in the substitute player before the 14th over of an innings. The replaced player will no longer be allowed to take part in the match, even as a substitute fielder.
Well, teams will also have to inform the on-field umpires or the fourth umpire before making the change to the playing XI under this rule, which is not applicable if the match is reduced to 10 overs.
The BCCI had said in a statement to the state units earlier this year: “With the ever-growing popularity of T20 cricket, it is imperative that we look at introducing new dimensions which will make this format more attractive and interesting not only for our viewers but also the participating teams from a strategic viewpoint.”
The statement further read: “The BCCI would like to introduce the concept of ‘Impact Player’ wherein participating teams could replace one member of its playing XI during a T20 match based on the context of the game.”
