IPL 2023: CSK need a long-term captain if IPL 16 is MS Dhoni's last season- Pragyan Ojha

CSK will be captained by MS Dhoni in upcoming IPL 2023.

There have been a lot of speculations that the upcoming IPL 2023 will be MS Dhoni’s last season, and if that happens, then who will be the next captain of the Chennai Super Kings? Well only time will tell the same, but it is clear that Dhoni will remain CSK captain until he quits the IPL.

Speaking regarding the same, former Indian cricketer Pragyan Ojha reckoned that CSK is not a team that believes in a lot of changes, so the franchise will look at the person who can lead the side for the next five to six years in the IPL, and they will begin the hunt once Dhoni gives them the signal to quit.

Pragyan Ojha said on JioCinema: “Till the time MS Dhoni is playing, there can’t be a different captain. It became all the clearer last year. Having said that, had you asked me a year earlier, I would have thought, maybe Kane Williamson.”

He added, “But whatever I know of CSK if this is MS Dhoni’s last year, they would want to pass on the captaincy to an individual who can do the role for the next 5-6 years and brings stability to the team. CSK is one such team who does not believe in a lot of changes and hence would look for a long-term captain. CSK is like a blue-chip team and not like a day trading one.”

Meanwhile, CSK ended their 11-year association with Dwayne Bravo, as well as released their death-overs specialist Chris Jordan ahead of the IPL 2023 mini-auction, which was really surprising for many.

Speaking on the same, CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan said, “It's a very tough call. As far as retention is concerned and releasing of players, you know that CSK has always been very passionate about the players, and they have also been contributing to the franchise.”

He continued, “It becomes very difficult for us to decide while releasing the players. The contribution they have made to CSK will always be cherished and we know that if there is an opportunity for any of them to come back, they will be back in CSK colors.”

Kasi signed off by saying, “Everybody knows that Thalaiva (Dhoni) will lead the side and he will do his best and the team will do well.”
