IPL 2023: Punjab Kings names Trevor Bayliss as new head coach

Punjab Kings decided not to renew Anil Kumble's contract ahead of IPL 2023.

Trevor Bayliss | GettyThe Indian Premier League franchise Punjab Kings (PBKS) has announced that England’s 2019 World Cup-winning coach Trevor Bayliss will become their head coach for the upcoming IPL 2023. Bayliss will replace Anil Kumble at the helm.

Anil Kumble’s contract was not renewed after the PBKS side failed to make the playoffs for three consecutive seasons under his coaching. They have finished sixth in each of the last four seasons.

Kings have qualified for the playoffs only twice despite being a part of the IPL from the very beginning, with the first time being in 2008, the inaugural edition of the tournament and then in 2014, when they made it into the finals.

The decision to let Kumble go was taken by a board comprising co-owners Preity Zinta, Mohit Burman, Ness Wadia, and Karan Paul, as well as Kings' chief executive officer Satish Menon.

Kumble joined Kings in 2020. At the time, he became the fifth coach Kings had appointed in five seasons after Sanjay Bangar (2014-16), Virender Sehwag (2017), Brad Hodge (2018), and Mike Hesson (2019).

Bayliss, on the other hand, has a glittering resume to boot as apart from the 2019 World Cup, he also coached the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) side when they won the IPL in 2012 and 2014. More recently, Bayliss was the head coach of Sunrisers Hyderabad in the 2020 and 2021 seasons.

I’m honored to be given the Head Coach’s role with the Punjab Kings. A foundation franchise with an appetite for success. I look forward to working with a talented squad of players determined to compete for silverware," Bayliss said in a statement.

The 59-year-old will be expected to turn things around for good along with captain Mayank Agarwal who had a dismal outing in IPL 2022 in his first stint as full-time captain of the side and failed to create an impact with his bat as well.
