MS Dhoni to lead CSK in IPL 2023, confirms CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan- Report

MS Dhoni had led CSK in the second half of the IPL 2022 as well.

MS Dhoni | BCCI-IPLMercurial 4-time Indian Premier League winning captain MS Dhoni is set to lead the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) franchise in next year’s IPL 2023 as well, reports have suggested. The development was reportedly confirmed by CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan on Sunday.

Earlier this year during IPL 2022 season, the team experimented with a change in captaincy by appointing Ravindra Jadeja as the captain two days before the start of the tournament. But Jadeja failed to inspire the team as they lost 6 of their first 8 matches and CSK reverted back to Dhoni as captain.

Though the change came too late for them, Dhoni managed to win an additional two matches in the 8 he captained, but CSK failed to qualify for the playoffs, winning just 4 out of 14 matches and finished 9th in the points table.

The 41-year-old wicketkeeper has been leading Chennai Super Kings ever since the start of the IPL and has tasted triumphs on four occasions. Dhoni has been termed as synonymous with the franchise and even CSK CEO had admitted the fact that Chennai Super Kings means MS Dhoni.

Meanwhile, CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan confirmed to InsideSport that MS Dhoni will continue to lead CSK in the IPL 2023 as well.

There is no change in our stance. We never said that there will be a change,” the CSK CEO told InsideSport.

With Dhoni at the helm, expect the CSK franchise to bounce back from a poor IPL 2022 where they were hit with form and fitness issues. There is genuine respect for Dhoni in the dressing room and among the top management at CSK.

With the impact of Covid-19 lessening with each passing week, it is expected the IPL 2023 to be played across multiple venues in the country and this might mean Dhoni and CSK returning back to their den in Chidambaram Stadium, in Chennai.
