Over the years, the Indian Premier League (IPL) has produced a lot of fresh talent for the country, but it is also regarded to be a difficult league for rookie players to break into.

A player's spot in the tournament can be jeopardized by a single poor performance, regardless of how he fared earlier in the season or what reputation he brings into the tournament. In IPL 2022, Yashasvi Jaiswal was in a similar predicament.

In the domestic one-day scene, Jaiswal made history by becoming the youngest player to strike a double century in the Vijay Hazare Trophy in the 2019/20 season, and he hammered bowlers all over the place in the 2019 U-19 World Cup.

However, because of the lockdown, he took a long vacation from all kinds of cricket, following which he struggled to make an impact for the Rajasthan Royals in IPL 2021.

This pattern resumed in the 2022 season when he was benched after three games. After being reintroduced to the team after seven games on the bench, he had a much more consistent run.

“When I played in the IPL. I played three games, then I got dropped for seven games and then I came back again and started playing,” Jaiswal told ESPNCricinfo

Jaiswal and Jos Buttler had a formidable opening partnership, with Buttler scoring the second-highest total of runs in a single IPL season.

"It was amazing batting with him," Jaiswal says. "We talk a lot - maybe not in the middle but outside the ground. He just tells me simple and clear things that I need to do. If he says something, I trust him and follow it, and it helps me. I was very happy batting with him. He just says, 'Play good cricketing shots' and I try to follow it."

Jaiswal has only appeared in two Ranji Trophy matches for Mumbai so far. In the second of those matches, he hit his first First-Class century as Mumbai defeated Uttarakhand by a record 725 runs.

"I think this Ranji Trophy match (against Uttarakhand) was very important for me. I got a chance to play after three games. So, for me, it's important, these performances.”
