IPL 2022: Cricket fraternity reacts as RCB qualify for playoffs after MI knock out DC with 5-wicket win

MI chased down DC's target of 160 with five deliveries to spare.

MI defeated DC by five wickets | BCCI/IPLMumbai Indians (MI) ended their otherwise disastrous IPL 2022 campaign on a high as they defeated Delhi Capitals (DC) by five wickets at the Wankhede Stadium on Saturday (May 21).

Asked to bat first, DC posted 159/7 in their 20 overs on the back of Rovman Powell’s 34-ball 43 and skipper Rishabh Pant’s 33-ball 39.

Jasprit Bumrah starred with the ball for MI, claiming three wickets by conceding only 25 runs in his four overs.

In reply, the five-time champions lost their captain Rohit Sharma (2 off 13 balls) cheaply but the duo of Ishan Kishan and Dewald Brevis added 51 runs for the second wicket to keep MI in the chase.

However, Mumbai lost Kishan (48) and Brevis  (37) in quick succession to find themselves in a spot of bother. Their dismissals brought Tilak Varma and Tim David to the crease.

David got a reprieve on the very first delivery as Rishabh Pant didn’t take a review for the caught behind. After the lifeline, he took the DC attack to the cleaners, smashing 34 off 11 balls (2 fours and 4 sixes) to put MI on the brink of victory.

Tim David may have got out in the 18th over but he had done his job by then. Tilak Varma too played the role of second fiddle to perfection, scoring 21 off 17 balls while Ramandeep Singh stayed unbeaten on 6-ball 13 to take MI over the line with five deliveries to spare.

MI’s victory also paved way for RCB’s qualification to the IPL 2022 playoffs while DC were knocked out of the tournament.
