IPL 2022: ‘Felt like I wasn’t treated properly’, Chris Gayle opens up on his decision to not enter the mega-auction

Gayle hinted that he could be seen in action in the 2023 edition of IPL.

Chris Gayle | BCCI/IPLWest Indies legend Chris Gayle had not registered his name for the IPL 2022 mega-auction and he is not being seen in action in the ongoing cash-rich tournament.

Almost three months later, Gayle opened up on his decision to not enter the mega-auction, saying he wasn’t treated well in the league for the last two years but refrained from going into full detail.

The 42-year-old, however, hinted that he could be seen in action in the 2023 edition of the tournament.

"For the last couple of years, the way the IPL went about, I felt like I wasn’t treated properly," Gayle told The Mirror.

"So I thought ‘okay, you (Gayle) didn’t get the respect you deserved after you did so much for the sport and IPL.’

"So I said ‘okay, that’s it, I’m not going to bother to enter the draft,’ so I left it as it is.

"There is always going to life after cricket so I’m just trying to adapt to normality."

Gayle was part of Punjab Kings (PBKS) in the last season and he had pulled out in the middle of the IPL 2021. The southpaw had expressed his desire to mentally refresh himself in Dubai before representing the West Indies in the 2021 T20 World Cup.

Apart from Punjab, Gayle played for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the IPL. His power-hitting and explosive batting as an opener made him popular among the fans.

However, the explosive opener failed to lift the IPL title with any of the franchises.

"Next year I’m coming back, they need me! I’ve represented three teams in the IPL, Kolkata, RCB and Punjab. Between RCB and Punjab, I would love to get a title, with one of those two teams,” Gayle said.

"I had a great stint with RCB where I was more successful within the IPL, and Punjab, they’ve been good.  I love to explore and I love challenges so let's see what happens," he further added.

Widely regarded as one of the best T20 players of all time, Chris Gayle appeared in a total of 142 IPL games, amassing 4965 runs at a strike rate of 148.96 with 6 hundreds and 31 half-centuries.
