IPL 2022: "I can't say that I stay cool during chases”, says Rahul Tewatia after powering GT to victory over RCB

Tewatia has enhanced his reputation as a brilliant finisher this season.

Rahul Tewatia | BCCI/IPLGujarat Titans (GT) all-rounder Rahul Tewatia is having a great time in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL). He has enhanced his reputation as a brilliant finisher by taking his team over the line in some tight chases this season.

Tewatia once again rose to the occasion for GT against RCB on Saturday (April 30). Chasing 171 to win, the Titans were struggling at 95/4 in the 13th over but Tewatia slammed an unbeaten 43 off 24 balls and added 79 runs in an unbroken 5th wicket stand with David Miller (39* off 24 balls) to take his team over the line with three deliveries to spare.

Earlier in the week, GT were in a precarious position against SRH but Tewatia had smashed an unbeaten 40 in a stunning 59-run partnership with Rashid Khan to guide his team home.

Speaking after the game, Rahul Tewatia said: "I can't say that I stay cool during chases, but a lot of things will be going on, as to how to take it forward, which bowler to target and which areas to hit. I then try and follow the plans."

The southpaw also gave a sneak peek of his mindset as a finisher.

"In the death overs, you'd need to play some pre-planned shots, but I certainly look at the field and then look at the ball before hitting. So, if the ball is outside off, I will look to go over the off-side. If it's on the stumps, I play the leg-side shots.

"I have bettered my off-side game during this tournament. The bowlers had planned to keep fielders in the off-side, so I knew it I could hit the gaps, I could get the boundaries. I have opened up both sides of the ground now.

"You have to finish games, never mind the target. The pitches have been really good, you can chase even 60 runs off the final 5 overs," he said.

With this victory, Gujarat Titans have consolidated their position at the top of the points table. They now have 16 points from 9 matches.
