IPL 2022: “He's moving up the ranks very quickly, could be walking into the Indian team" Shastri on Arshdeep

The young left-arm pacer has been highly efficient for PBKS in the slog overs.

Arshdeep Singh debuted in the Indian Premier League (IPL) for the Punjab Kings (PBKS) in 2019. He was one of two players retained by the franchise before the mega auctions earlier this year. Although he has only taken three wickets in eight matches this season, the figures do not reflect how much he has improved his game with the new ball and especially in slog overs.

The Punjab Kings (PBKS) clashed with the 4-time champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on Monday (April 25) at the Wankhede Stadium.  PBKS after losing the toss posted 187/4 on the back of some brilliant batting from opener Shikhar Dhawan (88* off 59 balls). Arshdeep, took 1 wicket while conceding 23 runs in his 4 overs.

CSK batter Ambati Rayadu was batting in full flow, hitting the ball all over the park. In the 17th over, the ball was handed to the 23-year-old pacer in an attempt to shift the momentum in the bowling team’s favor. Only 6 runs were scored in that over putting the pressure back onto the Jadeja-led side. In the penultimate over, the seamer kept his composure and continued bowling the right lengths to MS Dhoni and Ravindra Jadeja, both of whom were unable to put the ball away. The Jadeja-led side eventually fell short of the target by 11 runs.

Former India Head Coach, Ravi Shastri praised Singh while speaking to Star Sports saying that the young pacer could make it to the national side.

"For someone so young and then to deliver time and time again when the chips are down and the pressure is on him (it's brilliant to see). Arshdeep is holding on to his nerves brilliantly, he's doing well in death overs.” Shastri said.

"This shows he's moving up the ranks very quickly and he could be walking into the Indian team," he said further.

The Punjab Kings will next take on the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) on Friday (April 29) at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune.
