Vijay Shankar, the Gujarat Titans (GT) all-rounder, returned to the team's playing XI for their triumph over Rajasthan Royals (RR) on Thursday (April 14), but he was unable to make an impact with the bat, scoring just 2 off 7 deliveries. He became a Twitter hot topic, but for all the wrong reasons, as followers roasted him on the microblogging site. While some even questioned why he was chosen in the IPL auction over a veteran like Suresh Raina, others suggested he should simply be warming the benches in the cash-rich competition.
"I used to think Vijay Shankar is not a player worthy of Indian team but I was wrong cause to be honest he should not even warm benches in franchise cricket," one user wrote.
"Vijay Shankar was picked by a franchise but not Raina," another user added.
"Vijay Shankar's only contribution to cricket is helping make a legend out of Dinesh Karthik in the Nidahas Trophy final," one user chipped in.
"Vijay Shankar's wicket getting celebrated is his biggest achievement," one user commented.
Shankar started the season for GT, before he suffered a back niggle and as was replaced by B Sai Sudharshan. In the match against the Royals, he returned to the XI taking Sudharshan's position.
Gujarat Titans posted 192/4 despite Shankar's struggles, with skipper Hardik Pandya hitting an unbeaten 87 off 52 deliveries.

Abhinav Manohar continued his recent form with a 43 off 28 balls, while David Miller gave a strong finish with 31* off 14 balls.
The Royals were then blown away by Lockie Ferguson's pace, as he picked up three wickets for 23 runs.
The most important of these was Jos Buttler's, who had smashed a 23-ball fifty and was looking in ominous touch.
Gujarat Titans won by 37 runs to move to the top of the IPL 2022 points table. Debutant Yash Dayal also collected three wickets.
