The IPL 2022 has ten teams competing for the coveted trophy. There were many personnel changes made to the leadership positions in the franchises, which has seen the franchises naming new captains moving forward into the new decade.

One such franchise having a new captain was the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), who named Shreyas Iyer as their captain for the IPL 2022, after being bought by them in the IPL 2022 auction.

Iyer's KKR had a great start to the season, defeating the defending champions Chennai Super Kings by six wickets in the first game and holding the no.1 spot on the points table with three wins and a loss in 4 matches.

On Wednesday (April 6), Kolkata thrashed the 5-time champions Mumbai Indians (MI) by 5 wickets and 4 overs to spare.

Former Pakistani cricketer Shoaib Akhtar lauded Shreyas Iyer's captaincy and has claimed that Iyer is making a "serious case" for India's captaincy based on his IPL performances.

“Iyer is not putting pressure on the IPL with his captaincy, he is making a serious case for Team India's captaincy as well. He wants to cement his place in the Indian team and lead it as well. He is proving his worth,” Akhtar told Sportskeeda.

In addition to Shreyas, Shoaib stated that the KKR should "not give up" on Ajinkya Rahane, a senior Indian batter who was axed from the national Test side in February due to poor performances.

He should continue to score runs and lead the team well, and I believe he will become a big brand in the near future. Rahane has to deliver. KKR should not give up on Rahane so soon. Hopefully, he will perform,” said the former cricketer.
