Commentator Simon Doull on Tuesday (5th April) clarified his 'social media star’ comment on all-rounder Riyan Parag during Rajasthan Royals (RR)'s recent match against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in IPL 2022.

Parag, who has been with the RR for the past few seasons, was bought by the franchise for INR 3.8 crore in the mega auction. The right-hander so far hasn’t had the kind of impact that is expected of him. In IPL 15 till now, he has scored just 17 runs and remained wicketless in 2 innings from 3 matches.

Parag has received a lot of flak for his performances of late. Recently commentator Simon Doull called him a ‘social media star’ and said that Parag’s runs and strike rate aren't good enough and social media skills don’t count on the field as the RR player needs to up the ante of his game.

Doull's comments came during RR’s match against RCB. He came under scanner for his words as a fan on Twitter highlighted his opinion on the all-rounder and pointed out that his statements on Parag were uncalled for.

“Simon Doull on-air questioning RR’s decision to play Riyan Parag who has modest record. I think that is a fair opinion. But then he concludes by saying that I know Riyan is a social media star but that doesn’t count in a match. Why would any commentator say that on national TV?” A fan Tweeted.

Reacting to this Doull said although Parag is a social media star his numbers with the bat and ball in the IPL are not so encouraging. He also apologised for not making his point clear.

“I think you missed the point. The social media says to me he is popular and well liked but that doesn’t count when he is in the middle.. Runs and strike rate is his currency and IMO it’s not good enough. Maybe it’s lost in translation a little sorry.. Enjoy the game,” Doull replied.

Coming to the RR, the Sanju Samson-led side are placed second on the points table. They have won two out of their three games so far. They will next face Lucknow Super Giants on Sunday (April 10).
