IPL 2022: SRH lodge official protest with BCCI over Kane Williamson’s controversial dismissal against RR

Williamson was given out caught despite replays showing ball bouncing before landing in slip's hands | TwitterThe Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) have lodged an official protest with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) over the controversial dismissal of captain Kane Williamson, during their loss to Rajasthan Royals in their opening match of the IPL 2022.

Williamson was unlucky to have been dismissed in the franchise's opening match of the season against Rajasthan Royals. Kane had edged a delivery into the hands of the RR wicket-keeper Sanju Samson but he fumbled and the ball then fell right in front of first-slip fielder Devdutt Padikkal.

Padikkal looked confident in catching the ball cleanly, but the replays showed that the ball has bounced in front of him before he caught it. Despite there being enough evidence to give Williamson a not-out, the third umpire decided to give the decision in the bowling side's favor.

Following the due procedure, SRH has now lodged a protest against the third umpire.

Yes, we’ve written to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). The procedure is that the coach has to write and the process has been followed. The protest was also mentioned in the captain’s report which is given to the IPL match referee after each game,” a franchise official said as quoted by Cricbuzz.

After the match, SRH coach Tom Moody was surprised that Williamson was given out despite enough evidence showing that the ball had bounced before landing in Padikkal’s hands.

We were very surprised that it was given out, particularly when we saw the replay. I can understand the on-field umpires taking it upstairs, and when that happened and we saw the evidence. We’re certainly not umpires, but it looked pretty clear to us what the decision was.” Moody told in the post-match press conference.

RR had batted first and put on 210/6 in 20 overs with Sanju Samson making 55. In reply, SRH finished on 149/7 with Aiden Markram making 57* and Washington Sundar hitting 40 in 14 balls, after being reduced to 78/6.
