Chennai Super Kings (CSK) head coach Stephen Fleming on Monday (21st March) revealed why his team is undergoing their preparations in Surat instead of Mumbai for the IPL 2022.

The 15th edition of the IPL is set to take place from 26th March. The league stage of the tournament is slated to be played across four venues in Maharashtra.

The franchises have begun their preparations for the tournament. While most of them have gathered in Mumbai, defending champions Chennai Super Kings are practising in Surat.

The MS Dhoni-led side is currently at the Lalbhai Contractor Stadium and leaving no stone unturned in their preparations for the league. Head coach Fleming recently opened up about why the franchise opted to practise in Surat.

Speaking in a video posted on CSK’s Twitter account, Stephen Fleming said that their preparations for the IPL 2022 are going well. He revealed that they opted to practice in Surat because every team is preparing in Mumbai.

He added that similar conditions in Surat as that of Mumbai along with open wickets and long net sessions is adding great value in their lead up to the tournament.

"It's good. They've been training well for the last week so it's nice to join them finally. It's good to be out in good facilities... The challenge obviously in Mumbai [is] that all teams are training there. So we felt coming to Surat and having conditions similar in terms of the red soil and also the climate.

“It's not too far away and is similar to what Mumbai would be. But to have this ground to ourselves and be able to have open wickets and long net sessions have been very valuable," Fleming said.

CSK is expected to arrive in Mumbai later this week. They will begin their campaign against Kolkata Knight Riders at the iconic Wankhade Stadium on 26th March.
