Former New Zealand skipper Daniel Vettori on Monday (7th March) talked about RCB’s captaincy options for the upcoming IPL 2022 and believes that Virat Kohli will not return as skipper.

The stage is set for the Indian Premier League 2022. The 15th edition of the cash-rich league will begin from 26th March in Maharashtra. The tournament will see a different format this year with 10 teams being divided into two groups.

With IPL 2022 around the corner, RCB are yet to finalise their captaincy option. There have been lots of speculations about who will lead the side in the tournament. While many have backed Glenn Maxwell for the leadership role, some want Faf du Plessis to be the face of the franchise.

There also has been a buzz around that Virat Kohli, who stepped down as the RCB skipper last year, might once again captain the side. Many feel that him being relieved of India captaincy might prompt him to take the leadership role again.

Speaking to ESPNCricinfo, Daniel Vettori said that there’s no chance that Kohli will again captain the Royal Challengers Banglore. He stressed the fact that moving on will be the right thing for the batter as the decision won’t work.

"No (Kohli will not return as captain). I think it is as simple as that. I don't think that ever works, let alone in franchise cricket or international cricket. Once the captain is moved on, the right thing is for him to move on," Daniel Vettori said.

Vettori, who played for RCB, feels that franchise will choose Glenn Maxwell as their full-time captain and will use Faf du Plessis as the backup for the first three games which the Aussie will miss due to national duty. He, however, added that RCB might continue with the Proteas batter if they win those initial matches.

"I think they will look at Kohli, Maxwell and Du Plessis as the leadership group and even Dinesh Karthik. I think Faf will step in for Maxwell. But if they win the first three games, maybe they will continue on with him," he said.

"I think Maxwell is a shorter long term. Three years is a long-term time in the IPL. They will look at Maxwell as the three-year cycle and hopefully he continues to play as he did in the last IPL. They will factor that in that he will be the leader for three years,” he concluded.

The schedule for the 15th edition of the IPL was recently revealed by the BCCI. Royal Challengers Bangalore will begin their campaign against Punjab Kings at the DY Patil Stadium in Mumbai on 27th March.
