The Indian Premier League (IPL) Governing Council has divided all franchises into two virtual groups based on the number of titles they have won in the previous seasons. The decision was taken at the meeting on Thursday (February 24) which also clarified the total number of matches a team will play.

The tournament is all set to kick off from March 26 onwards with the 10 franchises divided into two separate groups for a total of 74 matches. Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Mumbai Indians (MI) are not in the same group.

Each team will play twice against the teams in their group and one team from the other group. Against the remaining four teams in the other group, each team will play against them only once.

The Twitterati reacted to the virtual groups after the addition of two new IPL teams this season. Some of the fans suggested BCCI make it 18 matches per side by letting the teams face each other twice in the season.
