The IPL 2022 auction went underway in Bengaluru, as the first day of the two-day event began on February 12, 2022. More than 590 players are slated to go under the hammer with two new franchises, Lucknow Super Giants and Gujarat Titans, making their first appearance in the auction.
The marquee set of players saw Shreyas Iyer getting the biggest bid from Kolkata Knight Riders at INR 12.25 crs. Kagiso Rabada for an INR 9.25 cr bid from Punjab Kings, who also got Shikhar Dhawan for INR 8.25 crs.
The auction was going well with Rajasthan Royals spending big money on Devdutt Padikkal (INR 7.75 crores) and Shimron Hetmyer (INR 8.25 crs).
A bidding war was on for Sri Lanka all-rounder Wanindu Hasaranga when, unfortunately, the auctioneer Hugh Edmeades collapsed midway on the floor and was unconscious with staff tending to him.
The auction had to be halted and while no reason has been shared for this, it was decided that lunch would be taken, while Edmeades was tended to.
