The fever of IPL 2022 has begun with the existing eight franchises announcing their retained players for the upcoming edition. The retained players won’t be part of the mega auction, expected to be held in January 2022.
As per the retention rules, the teams were allowed to retain a maximum of 4 players (up to three Indians or utmost two overseas) from their IPL 2021 squads.
Keeping in mind the regulations, Delhi Capitals (DC) have retained skipper Rishabh Pant (INR 16 crore) along with all-rounder Akshar Patel (INR 9 crore), opener Prithvi Shaw (7.50 crore) and South African pacer Anrich Nortje (6.50 crore) from their IPL 2021 squads featuring 27 players.
Under Pant, DC topped the points table this season with 10 wins out of 14 games. The wicketkeeper-batter was appointed captain after Shreyas Iyer sustained shoulder injury before the first half of IPL 2021. Although Iyer returned to the side for the IPL 14 second phase, the DC management decided to continue with Pant as skipper.
Akshar, Shaw and Nortje were also impressive for DC in the last two editions. While Akshar returned with the economy rate of 6.65 and 6.41 in the last couple of years, Shaw regularly provided the team with quickfire starts. The Capitals opted to retain Nortje for his ability to pick up early wickets and exceptional economy rate in the death overs.
Since DC retained four players, INR 42 crore has been subtracted from their purse worth INR 90 crore.
