The 2022 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) is likely to kick-off on April 2 as planned by the BCCI, Cricbuzz reported on Tuesday (November 23).
As per the report, the Indian board has internally told the key stakeholders that April 2, in all likelihood, is the date and Chennai, in all certainty, will be the venue.
The IPL 2022 season will feature 10 teams and there will be a total of 74 matches in the cash-rich event, with each team playing seven home and seven away matches. Last month, RPSG group and CVC Capital secured ownership rights of Lucknow and Ahmedabad-based franchises for 7,090 crores and 5625 crores, respectively.
From the next season, the duration of the tournament will be for over 60 days and, thus, the final should take place in the first weekend of June, that is either on June 4 or 5.
Since Chennai Super Kings are the defending champions, Chepauk will be the obvious choice for the IPL 2022 opener but no formal decision has been taken over their opponents.
Last week, BCCI secretary Jay Shah had confirmed that the IPL 2022 will be played in India.
"I know you are all eagerly waiting to watch Chennai Super Kings play at Chepauk. The moment is not very far, the 15th season of the IPL will take place in India and it will be more exciting with new teams joining. We have a mega auction coming up to see what the new combination looks like," Shah had said during an event in Chennai, where CSK’s fourth IPL title win was celebrated.
