Chennai Super Kings (CSK) owner N Srinivasan revealed MS Dhoni is not in favor of the retention rule as it may force the franchise to pay a lot of money. In the last IPL mega-auction in 2018, CSK had retained Dhoni, Suresh Raina, and Ravindra Jadeja.

Srinivasan has said the CSK skipper made it clear that the franchise shouldn’t make an exception to the rule even if the player in contention is him. BCCI will conduct a mega auction ahead of IPL 2022 and two new franchises will have the opportunity to build a strong team from scratch.

As per a report in Cricbuzz, All the existing eight IPL teams will be allowed a maximum of four retentions while the two new teams will be allowed to pick three players before the mega auction. There will be no Right To Match (RTM) option for the existing franchisees in the mega-auction this time.

Speaking to Editorji, Srinivasan said, “MS Dhoni is a fair person, he wants retention policy to come out as he doesn’t want CSK to lose lots money while retaining him - that is why he gives different reply to everyone." 

CSK may still go for retention to keep Dhoni, but they may not do the same for other star players this season. A franchise will pay Rs 16 crore for its first choice player if it retains 4 players while the amount will come down to Rs 15 crore if 3 players are retained. A franchise will have to spend Rs 14 crore if it retains 1 or 2 players.
