IPL 2022: BCCI outlines retention policy for existing franchises and two new teams

Lucknow and Ahmedabad are the two new franchises in the Indian Premier League.

IPL 2022 will to be a 10-team competition | BCCIAfter adding two franchises to the mix for IPL 2022, the BCCI has confirmed that the existing eight teams can retain a maximum of 4 players. On the other hand, the two new teams will be able to acquire three players from the player pool before the mega auction.

"The 8 existing team will first get the opportunity to retain a maximum of 4 Players and thereafter the 2 new teams will be able to retain a maximum of 3 players before the auction," the BCCI said in a mail to the franchises on Saturday (October 30), as quoted by Cricbuzz.

The Indian board also confirmed that the salary cap for the IPL 2022 Season will be INR 90 crore for each franchise adding that "The window for the 8 existing teams to retain the players will be from the 1st November 2021 to 30th November 2021. Thereafter the 2 new teams will have the window to retain the players starting from 1st December 2021 to 25th December 2021."

For the existing teams, the BCCI stated that they will be allowed to keep up to three Indians (capped/uncapped) and two overseas players with the total number of retentions not surpassing four. It has clearly mentioned that a team cannot have more than two uncapped players.

As far as the new teams are concerned – two Indians can be roped in outside the auction while the number of overseas players can only be one. Moreover, the new teams can sign only one uncapped player prior to the mega auction.

Meanwhile, the BCCI has also formulated a plan to deduct funds from the salary cap.

If a team retains four players, INR 42 crore will be subtracted from the purse while three retentions will lead to a cut of INR 33 crore and two retentions will result in the reduction of INR 24 crore. In case, a team retains only one player then it will lose INR 14 crore from its purse whereas each uncapped player retained will cost INR 4 crore each.

The board also cited the salary of each player in case of four retentions - INR 16 crore for Player 1, INR 12 crore for Player 2, INR 8 crore for player 3 and INR 6 crore for Player 4.

The salary for player 1 will be INR 15 crore, Player 2 will be INR 11 crore and Player 3 will be INR 7 crore in the case of three retentions. As for two retentions, the fee will be INR 14 crore for Player 1 and INR 10 crore for Player 2. If a franchise decides to retain only one player then it will have to pay him Rs 14 crore annually.

"The sums set out above are the minimum amount(s) which will be deducted from a Franchisee's Salary Cap. If the League Fee agreed with a Retained Player set out above exceeds the relevant sum set out above, then an amount equal to that higher League Fee shall be deducted from the relevant Franchisee's Salary Cap. If the League Fee agreed with a Retained Player is less than the relevant sum set out above, then an amount equal to the relevant sum set out above shall be deducted from the relevant Franchisee's Salary Cap," the BCCI clarified.
