Former Australian cricketer Brad Hogg has shared his views on the player retention for the upcoming edition of IPL 2022, saying overseas investment is risky nowadays.

A fan on Twitter asked Hogg to name the four players that Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) should retain before IPL 2022 auction and the Australian surprised many with his response as he left out South African legend AB de Villiers.

With the number of teams likely to increase from 8 to 10 for the IPL 15, every franchise can retain four players – keep three Indians and one overseas player or two Indians and two foreign cricketers and keeping the player retention policy in mind, Hogg named all Indian players whom RCB should retain.

Hogg said that the RCB should retain Virat Kohli, Mohammed Siraj, Yuzvendra Chahal, and Devdutt Padikkal while saying that investing in foreign players is risky now, especially due to COVID-19 pandemic.

Well, not picking AB de Villiers was the big surprise for the fans, but the former spinner said he would like to see for how long the Proteas legend wants to play before he will make a decision.

Hogg also left out Kyle Jamieson despite the New Zealander has impressed all in his maiden season with the RCB in the IPL 2021 and was one of the go-to bowlers for Kohli.

He wrote on Twitter, “4-year window to invest in players. Kohli, Siraj, Chahal, Padikkal. Keeping locals vital. I would find out how long AB De Villiers wants to play before I make the final decision. Jamieson would be looked out to. Overseas player investment too risky today though.”

Meanwhile, the Indian all-rounder Washington Sundar has been consistently performed well for the RCB and can be retained by the franchise given his all-round abilities.

Hogg said, “Contemplating him for his all-round ability in front of Chahal. Maybe a better option as you have a large pool of spinners to choose from in the auction and all-rounders are harder to get.”
