India and Delhi Capitals’ (DC) young batsman Prithvi Shaw has opened up about his refusal to train at the nets even though asked by head coach Ricky Ponting last year in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Since he made a sparkling Test debut for India in 2018, the right-hander has had a roller-coaster journey at the international level as he went off the tracks, witnessing a drop in form, technical, and disciplinary issues that led him to be dropped from Team India, as well as, Delhi Capitals (DC) in the IPL 2020.

However, the 21-year-old worked on the technical aspects of the game and returned to his stunning form with the bat in the domestic cricket and then in the IPL 2021, where he cracked 308 runs at an average of 38.50 before the T20 league got suspended because of COVID-19 bio-bubble breach.

Recently, Ponting had said that Shaw didn’t bat in the nets when the youngster was out-of-form in the IPL 2020 last year and now the young opener revealed he did that in frustration.

Shaw told Cricbuzz: “This happened last year when I was scoring big runs, I wanted to keep batting but then came a few games where I didn’t get runs at all. I kept training but didn’t get the results. So beyond a point, I got fed up and said ‘if it’s not happening, I will stop training for a bit’.”

He signed off by saying, “I just switched off for a bit and took the backseat. I was so much into it that I would spend two hours batting in the nets but then I didn’t score the runs, I just let go of it for a while. That’s what Ricky sir was talking about.”

Noteworthy, Shaw was again overlooked for the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final against New Zealand, starting on June 18 in Southampton, as well as, for the England Tests, though; he is expected to find a slot for India’s forthcoming tour of Sri Lanka in July 2021.
